While Springtime generally means warmer weather, it also comes with a lot of rain. Yeah, you do have to put up with a lot of bad weather and weekends indoors. Unless you’re brave enough to face the rain, that is. But once the clouds clear, it’s apparent that the rainy months were worth it. Flowers bloom and front yards are lush and green. If you’ve got a green thumb, you may be wondering what flowers are best for planting in the spring. Take a look at our list of some of the most colorful spring flowers.
To start, a great colorful flower is the Gibraltar Azalea, which is a bright orange color. The bush grows best in partial sunlight, and in soil that is acidic. Plus, the bright orange color of the flowers attracts wildlife such as butterflies and hummingbirds. However, they are poisonous if ingested so be wary if you have kids or pets.
Next, we have tree peonies which grow at a slow and steady pace. The colors of the flowers vary in color, from yellow to bright pink but the leaves aren’t nearly as pretty. In addition, some tree peonies are very fragrant and some aren’t. Soil should be neutral or slightly alkaline for these plants to flourish and they like a lot of sunlight.
There are many different kinds of mountain laurels, most of them have a mixture of red and white on the flowers. The flowers themselves grow on shrubs and are often in clusters. The shrub grows easily, even in the shade but you’ll see more flowers if the plant receives more sunlight. Typically, the flowers bloom in late May to early June. Mountain Laurels will grow best in soil that is acidic.
When thinking of a lilac flower, most people probably assume that they’re purple in color. While this is true most of the time, there are also white, pink, and sometimes even red color lilac plants. Also, lilac flowers are known for their fragrance. They grow best in neutral soil and prefer a lot of sun. Keep in mind, lilac bushes are prone to powdery mildew and should be in a well-circulated area. Additionally, try to keep their branches pruned.
These flowers are very distinct and interesting. They kind of look like big pom poms, with long stems. Usually, the flowers grow in clusters and are purple in color. Interestingly, the allium plant is part of the onion family and if the leaves are crushed they do have a little bit of an onion scent. However, the allium plant is not edible. They are extremely resilient plants and aren’t bothered by insects or rodents. Allium grows best in slightly acidic soil and is fairly low maintenance.
