The Benefits of Triple Pane Windows
Triple pane windows are, to say the least, quite a step up from the traditional, double glazed windows that have existed in homes of years past.
A triple glazed window is one that consists of three discrete panes of glass, with the middle layer being surrounded by an inert gas like argon, krypton, or a mixture. Triple pane windows allow for a much higher level of performance than its double paned predecessor, providing roughly 20-30% savings in energy when compared to that of a double paned window.
It should be noted that triple pane windows are able to provide additional insulation and energy efficiency not just because of the added pane of glass, but because that extra layer allows for another surface to hold a low-emittance (low-E) coating.

What is a Low-E Coating?
A low-emittance – or Low-E – coating is something that works to reduce radiant heat transfer. This means that the temperature inside the structure (be it a home or building) isn’t effected too much by the temperature outside, allow you to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter, since little heat is gained from the outside or lost from inside (via the triple pane windows).

What About R-Values?
If you’ve been researching windows at all, you’ve probably run across information on the different “R-Values” for individual windows. But, what exactly is an R-value?
Well, R-values are a measure of resistance to heat loss, with the R-value of a window being the measure of it’s ability to resist the flow of heat. This means that a window with a higher R-value is much more effective at blocking the transfer of heat that a window with a low R-value. Thus, the higher the R-value, the better the window will do in helping to insulate your home. This means that triple pane windows – which have a much higher R-value than double pane windows – can help in keeping your home warmer in the winter”¦especially during bitterly cold nights AND during power outages because less heat will escape through the windows.
The benefits of triple pane windows extend beyond those listed above. For instance, triple pane windows are extremely strong and durable, making them a “long term solution” to your window needs. This, of course, is on top of the fact that triple pane windows provide the most energy efficient glazing options, as well the ability to block heat loss.
